11 Things You Should Not Do in Your First Trimester

by Cozy Mind Life

The first trimester can feel like a rollercoaster — excitement, exhaustion, nausea, and about a hundred questions racing through your head at once. Whether it’s your first pregnancy or your third, those first 12 weeks come with their own special kind of chaos.

And while everyone loves to tell you what you should do… sometimes it’s just as important to know what to avoid. So here’s a gentle list of things you might want to skip during your first trimester — not to scare you, but to help you take better care of yourself (and that little life you’re growing).

1. Don’t Ignore Your Body

If you’re exhausted, rest. If you’re queasy, slow down. Now’s the time to truly listen to what your body needs — it’s doing something amazing, after all.

2. Don’t Skip Meals (Even If You’re Nauseous)

An empty stomach can actually make nausea worse. Keep snacks nearby — crackers, fruit, almonds — and eat small bites throughout the day.

3. Don’t Overdo the Coffee (Yes, Even If You’re Exhausted)

I get it — you’re tired, like bone-deep, can’t-keep-your-eyes-open tired. And that morning coffee feels like a lifeline. But try to keep it to one cup a day (about 200mg of caffeine), just to be safe for baby. Switch to decaf or herbal tea if you need a warm comfort drink. (And hey, naps are medicine too.)

4. Don’t Take Just Any Medication

Your go-to painkiller or cold remedy might not be pregnancy-friendly. And trust me, it’s easy to forget and grab something without thinking. Always check with your doctor or midwife — even for things that seem harmless. A quick message or call is worth the peace of mind.

5. Don’t Force Yourself to Power Through Your Old Workout Routine

If you’re used to hitting the gym hard, it can be tough to slow down. But this is the season of gentleness. Walking, stretching, prenatal yoga — those count. Honestly, even a stroll around the block can feel like an Olympic event right now, and that’s okay.

6. Don’t Forget to Drink (Water, Not Wine )

It sounds basic, but staying hydrated makes a huge difference — especially when you’re queasy, bloated, or just feeling off. I used to keep a big water bottle by my bed, my sofa, and in my bag… and I still forgot sometimes. Don’t stress, just sip when you can.

7. Don’t Smoke or Drink (Even “Just a Little”)

You’ve probably heard this a million times, but it’s worth repeating. That “just one glass” or “just one puff” can impact your baby more than you think — especially in these early weeks when so much is developing. If you’re struggling to quit, talk to your doctor. You’re not alone, and support exists.

8. Don’t Stress About Every Little Thing

Easier said than done, right? But try not to Google every tiny symptom (we’ve all been there). Trust your care provider, and give yourself grace.

9. Don’t Keep It a Secret If You Need Support

Some moms wait to share the news — and that’s okay. But don’t hesitate to tell a close friend, your partner, or someone you trust if you’re feeling overwhelmed. You don’t have to carry this alone.

10. Don’t Clean the Litter Box (Seriously)

If you have a cat, let someone else handle this chore. Litter can carry a parasite (toxoplasmosis) that’s dangerous during pregnancy.

11. Don’t Forget to Take Your Prenatal Vitamins

This is one of the few “musts.” Folic acid, iron, and other nutrients play a huge role in baby’s early development. Set a daily reminder if you need to — pregnancy brain is real.

One Last Thing…
You’re not expected to be perfect. You’re growing a human. That’s already incredible.

So be kind to yourself, take it one day at a time, and remember — there’s no “right” way to do this. Only your way.
